Stingrays Grab 2-0 Series Lead with 5-2 Victory in Game 2

KALAMAZOO, MI - Three straight goals to start the game, and two consecutive goals to end the game pushed the South Carolina Stingrays (2-0) to a 5-2 win in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series with the Kalamazoo Wings (0-2) Saturday night at the Wings Event Center. Caleb Herbert had a goal and an assist and Brett Cameron scored twice in the third period of play to lead South Carolina to the victory. The Stingrays lead the best-of-seven series, 2-0.

The Stingrays dominated the game's opening period, outshooting the Wings 19-4. Kalamazoo netminder Joel Martin did all he could to keep South Carolina off the scoreboard, but a beautiful passing play helped the Stingrays strike first. Derek DeBlois stole the puck on the left wing and fed a pass across to Kelly Zajac. With Joe Devin open in front, Zajac wasted no time, moving a pass to his teammate on the back door. Devin one-timed a shot past Martin's right pad to make it 1-0 Stingrays at 12:53.

The Stingrays would keep the foot on the gas pedal in the second period, scoring twice more to up their lead to 3-0. Another pretty passing play resulted in the second goal of the game. Nick D'Agostino brought the puck in over the blue line and fed David Pacan. He dished a pass to Herbert who walked in on goal. Martin challenged, but Herbert slid a backhander past Martin for his second goal of the playoffs at 3:45.

Wade Epp would make it a 3-0 game with his first playoff goal on a shot from the point at 6:30 that deflected past Martin. Herbert and Zajac assisted.

However, the Wings would respond with a pair of goals to make it a one-goal game going into the third period. Tanner Sorenson scored at 11:27 on a slap shot that beat Mark Dekanich under the blocker to make it 3-1, and Sacha Guimond scored on a backhand at 12:33 to make it 3-2.

The Stingrays would take control of the game again in the third period on back-to-back goals from Cameron. The forward's first goal saw him out-wait Martin, and flip a backhander over the goaltender at 3:03 to make it 4-2 South Carolina. Pacan and Austin Fyten assisted on the goal.

Cameron would score again a 6:35, toe-dragging around and defender and beating Martin from the slot with a wrist shot to regain a three-goal lead for South Carolina.

Dekanich earned the win in goal stopping 20 shots for the Stingrays. South Carolina outshot Kalamazoo 34-22 in the win. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.
