Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (34-17-3) saw their four-game winning streak snapped after falling 4-2 to the Gwinnett Gladiators (35-11-6) in front of a sell-out crowd of 7,356 on Saturday night at Germain Arena.
In a game that featured a playoff type atmosphere, Gwinnett opened the scoring when Guillaume Desbiens tallied the first of his two goals at 5:43 of the first period. Florida rebounded to convert on a 5-on-3 power play goal by Corey Neilson at 14:02 of the second period, evening the game at one.
Tied heading into the final period, the teams combined to score three times in the first four minutes of the frame. Gwinnett scored an early power play goal when Jon Awe beat Everblades goaltender Kevin Nastiuk with a slap shot from the blue line just 42 seconds into the period.
The Everblades answered that goal at 2:34 when Paul Cabana's shot from the slot found its way past Gwinnet net-minder Sean Fields, but the Gladiators grabbed the lead for good at 3:41 when Matt York turned an Everblades turnover into a goal. Gwinnett sealed the win with four seconds remaining in regulation on an empty-net goal by Desbiens.
Nastiuk (6-3-1) played well in goal for Florida, but suffered the tough-luck loss after stopping 31 of 34 Gwinnett shots. Fields (23-8-4) earned the win after turning away 32 of 34 Everblades shots, including many in spectacular fashion.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-for-5, while the Gladiators closed out game going 2-for-6.
The Everblades return to action on Tuesday, February 28 when they host on the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Brandon Coalter bobblehead when they enter the arena on Tuesday night.
