Royals Win Another Shutout Squeaker Over Dayton, 1-0

February 25, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - For the second time in less than a week, the Reading Royals (32-13-6=70) picked up a third period goal to support shutout goaltending and defeat the Dayton Bombers, 1-0. Last Saturday, the Royals defeated Dayton by an identical score; this time, however, it was Yutaka Fukufuji (13-7-3, 21/21) in goal (as opposed to Cody Rudkowsky last Saturday), who led the Royals to their fifth consecutive win.

The Bombers and Royals traded chances through the first two periods, and the teams' respective goaltenders-Fukufuji for Reading and Mike Brown for Dayton (who had also been the Bombers' goaltender in the 1-0 loss to Reading last Saturday)-traded saves, several of which were of the spectacular variety. In the third, however, the Royals capitalized on what was the team's fourth power play of the game, when Royals' defenseman Eric Werner was able to hold a Dayton clearing attempt and feed Reagan Rome in the high slot. Rome fired a low slap shot that Brown saved with the left pad. The rebound bounced in front of the Bombers' net where Dany Roussin was able to chop it off the short hop over the pad of Brown and into the net 2:39 into the period for his twenty-first goal of the year. The Royals were able to hold off the Bombers down the stretch including the final 1:11 during which Dayton had the power play and a sixth attacker, but Fukufuji made the stops he needed to make-and Reading got a couple of breaks, including having a deflected puck land on top of the goal in the waning moments-to bag his first shutout as a Royal.

The Royals travel to Toledo for a pair of games at the Toledo Sports Arena, Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3:00 pm, before returning to the Sovereign Center next Tuesday night against the Greenville Grrrowl. The first 2500 fans at Tuesday night's game will receive a Royals' poster (the fourth in a series of five) courtesy of the Reading Eagle. Royals' game day broadcasts can be heard on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata and www.royalshockey.com with pre-game beginning 30 minutes before the opening face-off. Streaming video is also available through the Royals' website on a pay per view basis provided by B2 Networks.
