Steelheads Let Lead Slip Away Before Falling To Wranglers, 2-1
February 25, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Las Vegas, Nevada - Forward Shawn Limpright potted the game-winning goal with under seven minutes left in regulation to help the Wranglers edge the Steelheads, 2-1, at Orleans Arena on Saturday night.
Limpright followed up his own shot and wrapped the puck around the net before stuffing it into the short side for his sixth goal of the season. Steelheads' goaltender Matt Yeats (19 saves) made the original save, but couldn't recover in time to get Limpright's second offering. Defenseman Scott Schoneck recorded the only assist on Limpright's tally at 13:14 of the third.
The only goal in the first period came off the stick of Steelheads' rookie center Dan Hacker. On the power play, winger Paul Caponigri found Hacker alone in front and he one-timed the puck past Wranglers' goaltender Marc Magliarditi (35 saves). David Bararuk registered an assist as well on the goal at 10:50 of the first period, extending his assist streak to six games. Bararuk's helper also furthered his road point streak to seven consecutive matches.
The Steelheads held the Wranglers to just one shot through the first 15 minutes of the opening period, while out-shooting them 12-4 through the first 20 minutes of play.
With only 1:11 left in the second period, the Wranglers tied the game with their second shorthanded goal of the two-game set. It was the 14th shorthanded goal the Steelheads have allowed this season, as Dan Tudin found Matt Dzieduszycki for a one-timer from the slot. Dzieduszycki converted the two-on-one break, beating Yeats cleanly on a rocket to the far post. Overall, the visitors spent nine straight minutes on the power play in the latter half of the second period, but failed to generate any great scoring chances before allowing the equalizing marker. The lengthy man advantage time came from a double minor to defenseman Steve Marr for high sticking and a major crosschecking penalty assessed to the Wranglers' Tyler Sloan.
Through two periods, the Steelheads held a 22-13 advantage in the shot department.
Limpright's goal was the only marker for either side in the third, as Magliarditi earned his 26th win of the season. Yeats lost for the first time in regulation on the road (7-0-2), while dropping his sixth game overall. The final shots were 36-21 in favor of the Steelheads.
This was the last meeting of the season series between the two division rivals, with the Steelheads (29-18-7) posting a 2-3-2 mark against the Wranglers (38-9-6). The one-goal game was the fourth in the seven games between these clubs. With their victory and the Phoenix RoadRunners 4-3 loss to the Long Beach Ice Dogs tonight, the Wranglers become the ECHL's second club to secure a Kelly Cup playoff berth.
The Steelheads return to Qwest Arena ice on Wednesday, March 1, as the expansion RoadRunners come to Boise for a three-game series. The "Pink in the Rink" jersey auction begins on March 1, as the Steelheads will be wearing special pink jerseys with proceeds from the auction benefiting Breast Cancer Awareness. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
