Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Salmon Kings hooked a point from the league leading Alaska Aces in the fourth battle of the season at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Alaska defeated Victoria in Overtime, 3-2.
After a scoreless first period, Nate Forster fed the fish in the second and scored a power play goal. Ryan Wade chased the puck to the left boards and cycled it to Adam Taylor, who backhanded a pass to Forster at the blue line. Forster rang it off the post to put the S-Kings ahead 1-0 at 2:47 in the second.
After killing off two Alaska 5-on-3 advantages, Victoria made it 2-0 as Tyler Shybunka grabbed a leading pass from Seth Leonard and beat Netminder Matt Underhill for his second goal of the season, with 2:03 left in the second.
The Aces crept within one with a 4 on 4 goal from Right Winger Mike Scott, who received a pass in the slot from Matt Shasby.
With 48 seconds left in regulation, Alaska tied the game with the goalie pulled and the extra man on the ice. A loose puck was batted in the net by Alex Leavitt, who earned his 64th point of the season.
For the second time this season, the Alaska Aces and Victoria Salmon Kings duelled in extra periods.
After a penalty was handed out to each squad, forcing 3-on-3 play about half way through the Overtime period, the Aces trumped the Salmon King with the winner at 1:04. Ryan Ramsay spotted the top corner from the right side of the crease to give the Aces their 18th road victory.
Victoria was 1-5 on the power play and held Alaska from scoring on any of their six opportunities with the man advantage. Boxma grabbed one point in his fourth loss in extra periods, and Underhill tallied his 26th win of the season. Alaska outshot Victoria 38-17 in front of a crowd of 4383.
Game two of the series will take place at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Saturday February 25 at 7:00 p.m.
