Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) - The Evansville Otters came from behind to defeat the Rockford RiverHawks 2-1 on Friday night in front of 5,350 fans at Historic Bosse Field.
Both teams remained scoreless through the first few innings until Rockford took the lead in the fourth. Without the benefit of a hit, infielder David Cooper reached on a walk, stole two bases and scored on an RBI groundout from All-Star shortstop Jake Eigsti.
Trailing 1-0, the Otters tied the game in the sixth inning on an RBI single from designated hitter Mike Durant. Two batters later, Mike came sprinting home on a Troy Frazier sacrifice fly as Evansville leapt ahead 2-1.
The lead was more than enough for Otters starter Scott Kelley, who allowed just one run on two hits. He picked off one runner and also teamed up with catcher Billy Killian, who threw two runners out at second base.
Relievers Patrick Crider, and Ryne Purcell bridged the gap to closer Eric Massingham, who secured the 2-1 win for Evansville. The Otters bullpen tossed the last 2 2/3 innings withouut allowing a hit.
With the victory, the Evansville Otters end a three game losing streak and improve to 13-33 this season. The loss pulls Rockford down to 20-26.
Scott Kelley (2-4) earns the win after his 6 1/3 inning performance that included four strikeouts. Rockford RiverHawk pitcher Brett Scarpetta (3-2) suffers the loss after allowing two runs over seven innings. Massingham also notched his seventh save in the victory.
Both teams will meet again on Saturday night in the middle game of the series.
