Freedom starter Andy Clark and Beach Bums starting pitcher Matt Smith were caught up in a pitching duel Friday night, but the Freedom broke out in the seventh with three runs for a 5-2 win.

The Freedom got on the board in the second inning against Traverse City starter Matt Smith. Junior Arrojo led off with a single and stole second. John Malloy singled to move Arrojo to third and Malloy advanced to second as the throw went home. Cole Miles hit an RBI groundout to first to score Arrojo. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Stephen Shults hit into a fielder's choice, beating out a close play at first to avoid the double play, which scored Malloy and made it 2-0.

Traverse City plated a run in the top of the fourth off of Freedom starter Andy Clark. Jose Vargas led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double play ground ball to cut the Freedom lead to 2-1.

Beach Bums starter Matt Smith shut down the Freedom after the third inning and Vargas added some more damage against Clark in the sixth. With one down, Vargas blasted his sixth homer of the season to left-center to tie the game up at two.

Andy Clark allowed a leadoff single in the seventh to Hector Bernal and was pulled after a sacrifice bunt. Zeb Engle came in to relieve Clark and a passed ball allowed Bernal to advance to third with one down. After a walk to Zach Pace, Engle got Matt Brown to pop up in the infield. With two outs, Engle picked off Pace at first and Bernal was thrown out between third and home to get out of the jam. Engle earned the win in his 2/3 innings of work, his first with Florence this season.

With the momentum, the Freedom took the lead in the bottom half of the seventh. After Junior Arrojo walked against Smith, Kevin Haas roped an RBI single off of Scott Reid and Stephen Shults broke Reid's 20 2/3 scoreless innings streak with a two-run RBI double for a 5-2 lead.

The Freedom snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory and sit one game over .500 at 23-22. They return home tomorrow at 6:05 for game two of the series as lefty Chris Ingoglia (4-3, 3.68) takes the hill to face former Freedom hurler Bryan Banes (6-0, 2.56).
