Southern Illinois Miners News Release
CRESTWOOD, Ill. - The Miners rallied in the middle innings and began their three game series with a blow out victory over the Windy City ThunderBolts 10-2, Friday night at Standard Bank Stadium.
Brendon Malkowski allowed just two runs and scattered seven hits in seven innings of work to pick up his team leading sixth win of the season. Windy City?s John Micone made his first start of the season and left after four innings, surrendering five runs to take the loss. Only one of those runs was earned.
After Sean Coughlin drove in Eric Suttle to give the Miners a 1-0 lead in the first inning, two Windy City errors opened the flood gates for four runs. The rally was highlighted by Sean Harrell?s two-run single. Harrell led the team with three RBIs.
First baseman Ryan Meade made his professional debut and drove in two runs with a pair of doubles. Meade drove in both of his runs on his first double after two of the first Miners batters walked to start the fifth. That extended the lead to 7-0.
Will Block and Coughlin hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth to give the Miners a 10-1 lead. Coughlin?s double plated two runs.
All nine Miners starters recorded at least one hit in the game.
Ricky McGraw tossed the final two innings of the game for Southern Illinois and allowed just one run, which was unearned.
The Miners will continue the series with Windy City on Saturday as Thomas Campbell (1-1, 2.28) makes the start for the Miners against the lefty Todd Privett for the ThunderBolts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Standard Bank Stadium.
The all-star break begins after the final game against the Bolts on Sunday. The Miners will begin the second half at home against River City on Friday, July 15 at 7:05 p.m.
