Evansville Otters News Release

The Evansville Otters got eight strong innings of pitching from Brian Kroll as the team scored all seven of their runs in the middle three innings, defeating the Florence Freedom 7-4.

The Otters got on the board first in the fourth inning. After Beau Blacken singled to lead off the inning, Trask Munoz walked. After unsuccessfully trying to sacrifice, David Gingrich lined a single into left, scoring Blacken and putting the Otters up 1-0. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third. A Josh Stewart groundout scored Munoz to make it 2-0.

Florence came right back in the bottom of the inning with two of their own to knot the game. Evansville took the lead right back in the fifth when with Frank Scott on third and Denver Stuckey on second, Blacken blooped a ball over the head of the first baseman Trevor Hall, scoring both runners and giving the Otters a 4-2 lead.

Evansville would extend the lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning as with Brian McKenna on second and Scott on first with one out, Stuckey ripped a double past a diving Scott Martin in right field. The ball rolled all the way back to the wall. Both runners scored and Stuckey wound up at third with a stand-up triple. Jeff Goldbach hit a sacrifice fly a batter later to score Stuckey and make it 7-2.

The Freedom scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, but it was not enough as Brian Kroll (5-4) threw eight strong innings allowing six hits and four runs, only one of which was earned. Ryan Burnau pitched the ninth for his ninth save of the season, tying him for fourth in the league.

Game two of the series is on Tuesday. The Otters will send Ben Foster (8-4) to the mound against Michael Dennison (8-7) for the Freedom. Game time is 6:05 p.m. and can be heard on 91.5, WUEV
