Rockford RiverHawks News Release
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Frank James nurtured a one-run lead long enough for the Rockford bats to wake up.
James pitched seven innings to lead the RiverHawks past the Kalamazoo Kings, 8-2. The win, in front of 1,255 at Marinelli Field, broke a first-place tie between the teams for the Frontier League West lead.
James (3-2) gave up two runs on six hits, struck out six and walked two in seven innings. James retired 12 of 13 after giving up Tim Brown's game-tying, two-run double in the third and surrendered only one hit the rest of the way. He pitched much of the night with a 3-2 lead.
The RiverHawks, who never trailed, took the lead for good on Todd Dulaney's RBI single to left field in the third inning. They left 13 on base, though, and didn't break the game open until the late innings, when they scored three unearned runs in the seventh and two on Nick Johnson's home run in the eighth.
Kalamazoo starter Jon Gutierrez (6-7) gave up nine hits and didn't make it through the fourth inning.
Game two of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. Dr Pepper/7-Up sponsors each Two-for-Tuesday, when hot dogs and soft drinks are each available at two-for-$2 pricing.
The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
