Espino Falls Short in Latest Attempt at Aeros' Record

Akron RubberDucks News Release
Erie, PA- Maybe the seventh time will be the charm for Akron Aeros righthander Paolo Espino.
Espino took the mound Saturday against the Erie SeaWolves needing a win to set a new record for career victories by an Aeros pitcher. Instead of a celebration, however, Espino struggled and the Aeros offense sputtered in a 4-1 loss at Jerry Uht Park.
Espino, who has 23 career wins in an Aeros uniform, has made six appearances looking to claim sole ownership of the Aeros career wins record. In all six he has either emerged with a no-decision, or, in Saturday's case, a loss.
Erie's Daniel Fields stroked a two-run home run in the first inning off Espino Saturday night, quickly getting the SeaWolves off the schneid after they were shut out by Matt Packer and company Friday night.
The first-place SeaWolves (29-18) added two more in the fourth on a double by Luis Castillo and a sacrifice fly by Jamie Johnson to make it 4-0 Wolves.
Espino (1-2) only gave up five hits over five innings, but walked three batters. He threw 97 pitches, 59 of which were strikes. Espino's only win came on April 23rd at home against Trenton. Each of his two losses have come against the SeaWolves.
Until his next outing Espino will remain tied with former righthander Jamie Brown, who won 23 games for the Aeros from 1998 through 2002.
After getting down 4-0, the Aeros prevented the shutout when Cedric Hunter connected for a two-out solo home run in the sixth off Erie starter Warwick Saupold (4-1). Hunter now has a six-game hitting streak, with three homers, since he joined the team last Monday.
Saupold was excellent, giving up just two hits over six innings in his first career outing against the Aeros. He combined with Casey Robowski and Justin Souza on a three-hitter. Souza worked the ninth for his 11th save.
The Aeros (22-27) and SeaWolves have split the first two games of the holiday weekend series. The loss snapped a modest two-game win streak, and sent the Aeros back to eight games out in the EL West.
The Aeros and SeaWolves will continue the series Sunday afternoon at 1:35. RHP Toru Murata (1-2, 3.38) will get the start for Akron, while the SeaWolves will counter with LHP Matt Crouse (3-3, 5.35). The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1350 AM, and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
