Erie SeaWolves News Release
A quality start from Warwick Saupold combined with timely hitting put the SeaWolves on top of the Akron Aeros 4-1 in the second game of the four game series.
Erie starting pitcher Warwick Saupold worked six innings, keeping Akron hitless until a fourth inning two out single from Ronny Rodriguez. The lone run was scored on a solo homerun hit by Cedric Hunter in the sixth, but that was the only offense Erie allowed.
The SeaWolves scored their four runs well before Akron's solo shot, with the first two runs coming in the first. Hernan Perez extended his hit streak to a season high eight games. Daniel Fields then followed up with a homerun to deep right that put Erie up 2-0.
The next two runs came in the fourth. Wade Gaynor led off with a single and was moved over to third on a Luis Castillo double. The throw from right fielder Carlos Moncrief was wide and when Jose Ramierez was unable to handle the cutoff throw. Gaynor scored and Castillo moved to third. Jamie Johnson then scarified to Moncrief to give Erie a 4-0 lead at the time.
Akron's only real threat to cut away at Erie's lead came in the top of the seventh. Ryan Robowski allowed a leadoff double to Moncrief, who moved over on a deep fly to right. GiovannyUrshela hit a blooper with two out in between second baseman Hernan Perez and right fielder Castillo. Perez made an over the shoulder leaping bare hand grab to end the inning.
Robowski finished off the eighth inning in order to allow Justin Souza to pick up his team leading tenth save on the season. The Akron loss was credited to starter Paolo Espino, who allowed all four of Erie's runs.
The SeaWolves and Aeros resume their series Sunday when Matt Crouse (3-3, 5.35) pitches against Toru Murata (1-2, 3.38 ERA) on a 1:35 first pitch.
