Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa.- The Curve dropped the second game of a four-game series to the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 12-5, in front of 4,243 fans at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Altoona held an early 2-0 lead before Richmond scored the next 12 runs in the game. Andrew Lambo reached base twice with a 1-for-3 day that included a walk in the loss for the Curve and has now reached base in 44-of-47 games he has played this season.
The Curve jumped to the two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Gift Ngoepe lead off the inning with a single to left-center. After the next two batters were retired, Lambo then drew a walk, setting the table for second baseman Jarek Cunningham. Cunningham hit a grounder back to Squirrels pitcher Jack Snodgrass, who overthrew his first baseman. Ngoepe and Lambo both scored on the play for the early lead.
Curve starting pitcher Stolmy Pimentel threw two scoreless innings to open the game before running into trouble in the third. He allowed a leadoff single to his mound opponent Snodgrass to start the third before Jarrett Parker hit the first of his two home runs on the night to tie the game at two.
Pimentel (2-3) worked a scoreless fourth before things came undone in the fifth. Richmond sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning and scored a total of six runs, which were aided by a pair of Curve errors, on four hits. A run-scoring single by Travious Relaford that scored Ryan Lollis ended the night for Pimentel. He lasted 4.2 innings and allowed eight runs (four earned) on a total of seven hits.
Richmond's offense kept its foot on the gas pedal in the sixth inning and added four more runs to go up, 12-2.
The Curve offense manufactured two more runs in the eighth inning with RBIs from Lambo and pinch hitter Justin Howard. Altoona closed out the scoring in the ninth on an RBI double from Ngoepe. The hit capped a strong night for the shortstop--he finished 3-5 with one RBI and a run. Altoona's Drew Maggi also had a multi-hit game in the loss on Saturday.
Snodgrass (4-0) remained perfect on the young season by picking up the win for Richmond. He allowed just the two unearned runs on six hits in his 6.1 innings of work.
With the series even at a game apiece, the Curve (20-28) look to take a series lead with a win in the 6 p.m. contest with the Squirrels (24-23) on Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The first edition of Sunday Night Fireworks will take place following the game with Richmond on Sunday. It's also Armed Forces Appreciation Day and a Community Collection Day at the ballpark. We will be collecting pet food and supplies on this Community Collection Day to help benefit the Central PA Humane Society. After the game, kids can run the bases.
On the hill for the Curve on Sunday will be RHP Luis Sanz (2-1, 3.65), who will be making his third start of the season and his first against Richmond. He'll be opposed by Squirrels southpaw Carlos Teller (0-0, 0.00) in the third game of the four-game series.
Gates at Peoples Natural Gas Field swing open at 5 p.m. while airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. For tickets and more information on the current Memorial Day Weekend homestand, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
