(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos' already strong Canadian content got another boost today with the club's selections in the 2007 CFL Canadian Draft.
With their first round selection (2nd overall), Edmonton selected kicker Warren Kean from Concordia. The Dundas, Ontario native played four seasons with the Stingers. Last season, the strong-legged Kean connected on 20 of 32 field goals, his longest from 44 yards, and he was good on 21 of 21 converts. Kean set four Quebec conference records, including field goals in a season (20) and attempts in a season (32). Last October, he established a Canadian university record by connecting on nine field goals in a six-overtime game against the Saint Mary's Huskies. Kean is a three time QSSF All-Star and was a 2005 CIS All-Canadian. The last time Edmonton took a kicker in the first round was in 1992 when Wyoming's Sean Fleming was chosen 6th overall.
Eskimo Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Danny Maciocia says, "Kicking is such a huge part of our game and it's very positive when you can get a Canadian who can handle field goals, punts and kickoffs."
In the second round (10th overall) the Eskimos selected defensive back Jason Nedd out of Akron. Described by Maciocia as "extremely physical", Nedd played in 12 games last year, starting the final seven games. He finished the 2006 season with 41 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He also had two 10-plus tackle games.
Michael Jean-Louis was Edmonton's selection in the 4th round (26th overall). The 6'0, 283lb defensive tackle out of Laval registered seven tackles and 2.5 sacks in eight games in 2006. He was named Laval's Rookie of the Year in 2004.
The Eskimos' final pick, also in the 4th round (27th overall), went to Calvin McCarty. A running back at Western Washington, McCarty started the first seven games in 2006 before suffering a season-ending foot fracture. The Burnaby, BC native was a second-team North Central Conference all-star and was ranked fifth among NCC rushing leaders with 492 yards and 5 touchdowns on 130 carries. He also caught 30 passes for 278 yards.
The Edmonton Eskimo Football Club is one of the most successful teams in CFL history with 13 Grey Cup championships and a North American pro-sports record of 34 consecutive years in the playoffs. A community-owned team, the Eskimos pride themselves on giving back to the community that has supported the organization throughout its illustrious history.
