Errors Haunt Mavs in Loss

August 19, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Mavericks committed four errors and had various other defensive miscues, helping aid the Rancho Cucamonga in a 9-2 Quakes win at the Epicenter Thursday night.

The game got off to a decent start for the Mavs, taking 1-0 lead in the second. Kuo Hui Lo shot an RBI double to center field to open the scoring.

However, Mavs faltered for the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the third with a runner at first and one out, Edilio Colina mishandled a routine double-play ball putting runners at the corners instead.

Alberto Rosario followed with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to tie the game.

Things really went south in the fourth when the Quakes scored five times. After Clay Fuller was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Richard Cates sent a line drive to left field.

Lo unnecessarily slid on the play and missed the ball completely, turning what should have been an out into an RBI triple instead.

Luis Jimenez and Darwin Perez each had RBI singles later in the inning. Perez and Dillon Baird also completed a double steal to add another run, and an error by Rich Poythress brought home the final tally of the frame.

Mike Trout hit a two-out RBI single in the sixth to give the Quakes a commanding 7-1 lead.

Colina lifted a sac fly to right in seventh to cut the lead down to five, but it wasn't enough to get back in the game.

The Quakes salted it away with an RBI single by Angel Castillo in the seventh. Kyle Seager committed two errors in the eighth, helping the Quakes score once again.

Quakes pitcher Kyle Hurst quieted a Mavericks offense that had walked all over Rancho Cucamonga the night before. Hurst (2-3) pitched 5.1 effective innings, allowing just one run and six hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Andrew Carraway pitched better than hits final line might indicate, but ended up with the loss. Carraway (9-7) was charged with seven runs--five earned--and eight hits. He struck out six and walked one.

The Mavs will look to take three of four from the Quakes when they meet at the Epicenter Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the High Desert's TALK 960 and www.talk960.com.
