Quakes Now Two Back After 12-4 Loss

August 19, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped their sixth straight decision, getting belted by the High Desert Mavericks on Wednesday night by a score of 12-4 at The Epicenter.

High Desert's Rich Poythress added to his league-leading RBI total, driving in four runs, while collecting three hits and scoring three times, in helping the Mavs move to two games in front of the Quakes in the South Division.

Quakes' starter Ryan Chaffee (5-6) struggled, allowing seven runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.

The Mavs got to Chaffee for an early run, as Ji-Man Choi's sac fly made it a 1-0 Mavs' lead in the second.

The Quakes actually had the lead for a brief time, scoring twice in the third against High Desert starter Kenn Kasparek (8-4). Jon Townsend opened the inning with a walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Ramos. Mike Trout followed with his first of two hits, a single to left field that moved Townsend to third. After Kasparek got Alberto Rosario to line out to shallow right field for the second out, he unloaded a wild pitch to score Townsend, tying the game at 1-1. Luis Jimenez followed with a run-scoring hit, plating Trout for a 2-1 lead.

Chaffee was unable to hold the lead though, as the Mavs scored three times in the fourth. Jake Shaffer's RBI double knotted the game at 2-2, before Choi followed with a two-run single to put the Mavs up for good at 4-2.

High Desert blew it open with a seven-run sixth inning, highlighted by Poythress' three-run double off of Christian Scholl.

Trailing 11-2 in the seventh, the Quakes got two back, as Clay Fuller scored on a wild pitch and Dillon Baird scored on Townsend's RBI groundout, making it 11-4.

Poythress' 29th homer of the year capped the route at 12-4, giving him a league-best 113 RBIs this year.

The Quakes (25-26, 64-57), now two games out of first place in the South Division, look to end their six-game losing streak on Thursday night, sending Kyle Hurst (1-3) to the bump, against High Desert's Andrew Carraway (9-6) at 7:05pm.
