August 19, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

The Visalia Rawhide jumped out to a six-run lead after four innings before cruising to a 7-2 win over the San Jose Giants on Wednesday evening at Recreation Park. Visalia pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts en route to handing the Giants their season-high sixth consecutive defeat. The loss drops San Jose's overall record to 65-56.

Rawhide starting pitcher Eric Smith (3-4) fanned 10 over six impressive innings to record the victory. Smith allowed six hits and one unearned run while issuing two walks during his stint on the mound. Chase Anderson picked-up his second save of the year after tossing the last three innings with one run surrendered and four strikeouts.

Joel Weeks (3-for-4, 2B) knocked out three hits while Charlie Culberson (0-for-2, 2 RBI) drove home both of San Jose's runs with sacrifice flies to lead the Giants offensively.

Visalia plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning against Giants starter Oliver Odle to take the early lead. Paul Goldschmidt began the frame with a double to left before Matt Davidson singled to put runners on first and third. Josh Ford then delivered an RBI single as Goldschmidt scored while after Rossmel Perez struck out, Brent Greer hammered a two-run double to deep left center extending the lead to 3-0.

The Rawhide kept the pressure on with two more runs in the third before a single tally in the bottom of the fourth. Marc Krauss began the third-inning rally by drawing a walk before Goldschmidt's second double put runners on second and third. Davidson followed with an RBI single and then Ford's fielder's choice groundout to shortstop made the score 5-0.

Visalia took a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning as Niko Gallego walked with one out, stole second and came home on Kyle Greene's two-out single to right.

Odle (11-6) suffered the loss after yielding six runs (all earned) on seven hits over four innings - his shortest start of the year. Odle struck out five and walked two.

The Giants threatened in the top of the third inning against Smith as three singles from Weeks, Francisco Peguero and Jose Flores loaded the bases with two outs, however Johnny Monell struck out swinging to end the threat. Smith struck out two batters in each of the first five innings.

San Jose finally broke through in the top of the sixth as Flores drew a leadoff walk before Monell singled sharply into right. On the play, the right fielder Greene mishandled the ball for an error as Flores raced into third. Culberson followed with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Rawhide though got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as Greer led off with a single against reliever Eric Stolp and scored three batters later on Greene's sacrifice fly.

The Giants loaded the bases with none out in the top of the eighth while facing Anderson, but managed only one run in the frame. Consecutive singles from Peguero and Flores started the inning before Monell was hit by a pitch. Culberson followed with his second sacrifice fly to make it 7-2 and then Anderson struck out the next two hitters, Wendell Fairley and Ehire Adrianza, to end the inning.

Anderson finished the game by retiring the last six San Jose batters that came to the plate.

Peguero (2-for-4) and Flores (2-for-3) also finished with multi-hit games for the Giants.
