Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (20-9) made three costly errors and dropped their second decision in a row to the St. Paul Saints (16-12) in a 7-2 loss at Midway Stadium on Saturday night.
The Saints put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Scooter Jordan led off with an infield single over the pitcher's mound. Jordan stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Adam Olow drove Jordan home with a double to give the Saints the lead, 1-0. Olow went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Marcel Longmire. After one inning, the Saints led, 2-0.
St. Paul extended the lead in the third inning. Ryan Priddy started the inning with a bunt single and Jordan followed with an infield single. After Matt Brunson grounded into a fielder's choice that saw Priddy cut down at the plate, Olow walked to load the bases. Longmire followed with a ground ball to Canaries second baseman David Keesee. Keesee misplayed the ball allowing Longmire to reach base. Jordan scored on the play to give St. Paul a 3-0 lead. The Saints extended their lead to 5-0 when Brent Krause singled to drive in Brunson and Olow.
In the fourth inning, Ryan Gripp led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Priddy. Jordan moved Gripp to third with a groundout. Brunson followed with a groundball to Canaries shortstop Angelo Fermin. Fermin threw the ball away at first base. The error allowed Gripp to score and gave St. Paul a 6-0 lead.
The Canaries got a run in the top of the fifth inning. The Birds loaded the bases on singles by Will Smith, Ben Van Iderstine, and Tim Marks. Fermin drew a bases loaded walk to force in Smith and put the Canaries on the board. After four and a half innings, the Canaries trailed, 6-1.
The Birds got another run in the eighth inning. Wil Quintana got to second base on a throwing error by Saints third baseman Ryan Gripp. Quintana moved to third on a groundout by Smith, and Van Iderstine drove him in with a single to pull the Canaries within four, 6-2.
The Saints added the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth. Longmire and Brian Sprout led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second base. Krause followed with a fly out to right field. Longmire tagged and took off for third on the play. The throw to third base by Canaries right fielder Wil Quintana was off-line and allowed Longmire to score for the 7-2 final.
Micah Posey (1-4) took the loss for the Canaries pitching his first complete game of the year. Posey went eight innings giving up seven runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk, while striking out eight. Brian Whinnery (1-1) picked up his first win of the season.
The Canaries return to the Birdcage on Monday night when they host St. Joe Blacksnakes in the first of a three-game series. Traveling minor league act Birdzerk, presented by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard, will perform at the Birdcage on Monday night.
