St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (June 9, 2007) - The St. Paul Saints starting pitchers continue to feed off of each other as Brian Whinnery provided a solid start going 6.0 strong innings as the Saints defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 7-2 on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 6.109.

The Saints have been pitching without a number five starter since releasing Jeff Urban and Whinnery, who started three of the six games he's appeared in, filled the roll and then some going 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out four, picking up his first victory of the season.

The Saints offense struck early for the second straight night pushing across two runs in the first inning. Adam Olow doubled home Scooter Jordan and Olow would later score on a ground out by Marcel Longmire.

The Saints took a 5-0 lead in the third when, with the bases loaded, Longmire reached on an error by secondbaseman David Keese scoring Jordan. Brent Krause tacked on a two-run single.

The Saints added one more in the fourth when Ryan Gripp led off with a single to right. Ryan Priddy sacrificed him to second. With Gripp at third and two outs Matt Brunson's grounder to Angelo Fermin, at short, was thrown away allowing Gripp to score, making it 6-0.

The Saints have won three straight and go for their first series sweep on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (3-1, 4.06) to the hill against Canaries RHP Pat Mahomes (4-0, 1.89). The game can be seen on FSN North. There is no radio, but the game can be heard on the Saints website at saintsbaseball.com.
