Stockton Ports News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Sunday's contest proved to be the most forgettable game of the season for the Stockton Ports. Stockton committed six total errors-four in the seventh inning-leading to a total of 11 unearned runs allowed in an 18-2 loss at the hands of the Lancaster JetHawks.
The game started well for Stockton as Brett Vertigan opened the contest with a double to left and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Tyler Marincov to give the Ports a 1-0 lead.
Lancaster fired back in the bottom of the first with a pair of home runs. With one on and one out, Derek Fisher hit a two-run homer to center to give the JetHawks a 2-1 lead. Two batters alter, Ronnie Mitchell homered to right to make it a 3-1 game.
The JetHawks added to their lead in the second. Marc Wik tripled with one out and scored on an ensuing single by Jose Fernandez. Fernandez scored two batters later on a fielder's choice groundout by Ritchie that made it a 5-1 Lacnaster advantage.
Stockton's second and final run came in the top of the fourth when Matt Chapman hit his fifth home run in eight games out to right-center to cut the JetHawks lead to 5-2. Both Ports runs in the contest were scored off JetHawks starter Austin Chrismon (4-2), who picked up the win after going five innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one.
Ports starter Kyle Finnegan (6-7) would not make it out of the fourth inning and the JetHawks would plate an unearned run in the frame. Mott Hyde reached on a throwing error by shortstop Melvin Mercedes with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single by James Ramsay to make it a 6-2 game. The hit would be the knock-out blow to Finnegan, who suffered the loss after going 3.2 innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out four.
Trevor Bayelss recorded the final out of the fourth inning and gave up his only run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by J.D. Davis, plating Chase McDonald who'd walked earlier in the inning. Bayless allowed the one run on one hit in an inning-and-a-third.
Taylor Thompson came on to pitch the sixth inning in his third Major League rehab appearance with the Ports. After recording back-to-back strikeouts to open his outing, Thompson gave up a triple to Ramsay, who scored on the same play when the center fielder Vertigan bobbled the ball. The play was scored a triple and an error and gave the JetHawks an 8-2 advantage. The run was unearned and the only run allowed by Thompson, who threw 16 pitches, 14 for strikes.
Stockton suffered through its worst inning of the season in the bottom of the seventh with Victor Veliz on the mound to begin his outing. Veliz recorded a strikeout of Fisher to open the frame, but then gave up three straight singles. The third single was an RBI single hit to left field by Davis, and on the play the left fielder B.J. Boyd kicked the ball, allowing runners to advance to second and third. Hyde followed with a sac-fly to center to plate the JetHawks' 10th run of the contest. Wik came up next and hit a ground ball to first that was bobbled by Michael Soto which kept the inning alive. After Fernandez reached on an infield single, Ramsay came up and reached on a fielding error committed by second baseman Branden Cogswell. After Ritchie drew a walk to load the bases, Fisher came up and hit his fourth grand slam of the season to balloon the JetHawks lead to 16-2 and knock Veliz from the game.
Following Veliz' exit, the Ports called on their designated hitter Santiago Chavez to pitch. Chavez first faced McDonald, who reached on a fielding error committed by Chapman, the third baseman. Mitchell followed with his second home run of the night, a two-run shot to right that made it an 18-2 contest.
Of the 10 total runs that scored in the bottom of the seventh, nine were unearned for the team. Veliz allowed eight runs (one earned) on five hits in two-thirds of an inning. Chavez was charged with the final two runs and would go on to pitch a perfect eighth inning while recording a strikeout.
Kevin Comer and Andrew Walter combined to pitch the final four innings scoreless for the JetHawks.
After splitting a four-game series at Lancaster, the Ports return home for three games with the Modesto Nuts. Raul Alcantara (0-0, 3.76 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Konner Wade (5-6, 4.37 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
