Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Seeking a series split, the JetHawks received plentiful run support behind strong pitching in an 18-2 win over the Stockton Ports on Sunday night at The Hangar.
Derek Fisher and Ronnie Mitchell both hit two home runs in the contest, and the JetHawks (51-48) plated 10 runs in the seventh inning against Ports (53-46) pitchers Victor Veliz and Santiago Chavez.
Austin Chrismon (4-2) received the win after limiting Stockton to two runs over five innings of work. Tandem starter Kevin Comer struck out three and allowed just one hit over three shutout innings, and Andrew Walter pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the series split.
Brett Vertigan led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a RBI-groundout by Tyler Marincov. But Lancaster responded with three runs in the bottom of the first against Kyle Finnegan (6-7), as Fisher hit a go-ahead two-run homer and Ronnie Mitchell later added a solo home run. The JetHawks touched Finnegan for six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 3.2 innings.
Chrismon, meanwhile, would allow the only other Ports run of the game in the fourth on a Matt Chapman solo home run.
In the seventh, Lancaster scored 10 runs against Stockton pitching, including a Fisher grand slam and a two-run homer by Mitchell. Fisher's grand slam was his fourth of the season. J.D. Davis hit a RBI-single and Mott Hyde added a sacrifice fly in the inning. Veliz was charged with eight runs (one earned) as the Ports committed four errors in the inning and a total of four in the game.
A second-inning RBI-single by Jose Fernandez gave the JetHawks their 1,000 hit of the season, the second-highest total for any club in Minor League Baseball this season.
The homestand continues on Monday as the JetHawks open a three-game series against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes at 6:30 p.m. Akeem Bostick (1-3, 4.38) will pitch for Lancaster against the Quakes' Brock Stewart (2-2, 4.87). The JetHawks will host Make-A-Difference Monday, and all children under 12 will receive a free toy courtesy of Grace Resource Center as the JetHawks celebrate Christmas in July.
