Giants Begin Three-Game Series At Visalia Tonight The San Jose Giants continue their road trip this evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Visalia Rawhide at Recreation Park. Jose Reyes is slated to make the start on the mound for San Jose tonight. The Giants are just 2-11 against Visalia this season (47-39 versus the rest of the league), including a 1-6 mark at Recreation Park. San Jose is in second place in the Second Half North Division race with a 19-10 record - one game behind Modesto (20-9) for the top spot.
Split In Bakersfield The Giants split four games against the host Bakersfield Blaze in a series that concluded last night. Bakersfield snapped San Jose's six-game winning streak with an 8-5 victory in the series opener on Thursday before the Giants bounced back to claim a 2-1 decision on Friday. The Blaze won by a 7-4 score on Saturday and then San Jose earned the split with a 9-1 rout last night. The Giants had a total of just 18 hits over the first three games before a 13-hit barrage in yesterday's contest.
Won 15 Of 18 The Giants enter this evening's contest having won 15 out of their last 18 games. San Jose enjoyed a seven-game winning streak from July 7-13 and a six-game winning streak from July 16-21. The Giants haven't lost back-to-back games since July 3-4.
Stellar Pitching The Giants pitching staff has enjoyed tremendous success during the club's recent surge. Over the last 18 games (15-3 record), San Jose owns a team ERA of 2.12 (40 ER/170.0 IP). The Giants have surrendered two runs or fewer in 13 out of their last 17 games.
On The Road The Giants are just 19-27 away from Municipal Stadium this season - the second-worst road record in the league (Bakersfield 17-33). San Jose is 12-9 in their last 21 road games dating back to May 31 after starting the year 7-18 away from home. Last Thursday began a stretch for the Giants playing 14 out of 18 games on the road. San Jose's team ERA on the road is 4.48 compared to 3.02 at home.
Christian Arroyo With two more hits last night, shortstop Christian Arroyo is now batting at a .362 clip since the All-Star break (26 games). Arroyo has 12 multi-hit contests in the second half. He also hit his 20th double of the season yesterday (in just 53 games played). Arroyo's .329 overall batting average leads the team.
In July The Giants are 17-7 in July to clinch their first winning month of the season (April 7-14, May 14-15, June 11-14). San Jose boasts the best record in the league this month. The Giants' 2.80 team ERA in July also leads the league while their 23 home runs this month are tied for third (Lancaster tops with 29). San Jose's bullpen ERA this month is a sparkling 1.92. Individually, the Giants' best hitters in July have been Christian Arroyo (.341, 2 HR, 15 RBI), Brian Ragira (.319, 3 HR, 9 RBI) and Angel Villalona (.287, 7 HR, 21 RBI).
Smith Slams The Door Jake Smith picked-up his sixth save of the season last Friday. All six saves have come in the second half. Smith owns a 2.67 ERA this year and has allowed only 31 hits in 64 innings with 18 walks and 86 strikeouts. Smith is 13th in the California League in strikeouts and the only reliever ranked among the top 18. Since June 1, Smith boasts a 1.42 ERA (20 G) with just 10 hits allowed in 31 2/3 innings pitched (46 SO). Smith has not allowed a hit in his last 10 2/3 innings spanning eight appearances.
Quest For .500 A victory tonight would get the Giants (49-50) back to .500 overall for the first time since the opening week of the season (2-2 record on April 12).
Opponent Notes: Visalia Rawhide The Visalia Rawhide, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, own the best record in the league at 60-39. Visalia has lost five games in a row after winning 11 out of 14. The Rawhide lead the league in ERA (3.40) and are seventh in batting average (.254). Visalia has clinched a playoff spot after winning the first half North Division title.
