Giants Race Out, Blaze Fall 9-1

July 27, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The Bakersfield Blaze couldn't match the San Jose Giants energy early on Sunday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark, as the Giants blitzed to a quick eight run lead and held the Blaze at bay over the final six innings, giving the Blaze a series split in the first four games of the seven game homestand with a 9-1 defeat.

Brett Ash (L, 4-7) was the man on the wrong side of the Giants hot start. The Topeka, Kansas native was off his game, going just 2.1 innings while giving up eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and a pair of walks. An error didn't help Brett, but San Jose was simply locked in, and Brandon Bednar's 3rd inning homer gashed the Blaze and turned the contest into an early blowout.

The Giants runs came in a three-inning barrage, scoring one in the 1st on a pair of hits, two in the 2nd on two hits and an error, and then a big five-spot in the 3rd when the club batted around.

From there, the rest of the night was fairly academic. Giants top prospect Chase Johnson was electric, going 6.2 innings and allowing just a single Blaze run on four hits and a key wild pitch. Johnson struck out seven Blaze on the night and left with a seven run lead.

The Giants added one more late on an Angel Villalona homer to put the finishing touches on the evening.

For the Blaze, the homer for Villalona was only significant because it marked the first earned run allowed by Bakersfield relievers in the series. Prior to the solo shot in the 9th, the Blaze bullpen had gone 19.1 innings and allowed just two unearned tallies on the homestand. Awfully impressive stuff.

The Blaze now sit at 2-2 on the homestand with the High Desert Mavericks coming to town for three games, Monday through Wednesday.

The opener of that set is a Bakersfield Hyundai presents Dollar Monday night at Sam Lynn, with admission and hot dogs each just one dollar. Gates open at 6:45pm and first pitch is set for 7:45pm. David Ledbetter gets the call for the Mavs and Eddie Campbell for Bakersfield.

Listen to every pitch live at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio. Dan Besbris has the call.
