Winnipeg, MB -- The Manitoba Bison men's hockey team prepares for the 2009-10 season as returning head coach Mike Sirant adds a new recruit - he played in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as a defenceman. Bisons head coach Mike Sirant is pleased to announce the commitment of Chad Erb to the Bison program for the upcoming season.
Erb, 20, completed the 2008-09 season with the Brandon Wheat Kings and had played four seasons with Brandon. In 2008-09, Erb had his best season with Brandon by producing 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) with 154 penalty minutes and +25 plus/minus rating (third best on team) in 54 regular season games. In the 2009 WHL playoffs, he added three assists with 23 PIMs in 12 games. Erb was named the team's Unsung Hero Award after the 2007-08 campaign when he had ten points and +19 rating in 56 regular season games.
In his four seasons (2005-09) as a Wheat Kings player, the Sanford, MB native accumulated 24 points (7g, 27a), a combined +50 rating with 372 PIMs in 183 regular season games. He added five assists with 62 PIMs in 29 WHL playoffs games.
Sirant stated, "Chad was a priority in our recruiting plan and we are very excited to receive his commitment to play for the Bisons. He is very strong defensively, has good mobility and makes a good first pa ss. Chad plays the game hard and his size plus toughness will provide a physical presence on the Bisons' blueline. He brings leadership skills and a winning attitude inherited from playing for Kelly McCrimmon and the Wheat Kings organization."
Prior to Brandon, the 6'3", 190 lbs. defenceman played for the Pembina Valley 'AAA' Midget Hawks during the 2004-05 season and was a member of the gold medal winning Team Western at the 2005 World Under 17 Challenge.
