Iowa Wolves News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Energy rallied from an 18 point 1st half deficit to defeat the Los Angeles D-Fenders 104-100 Friday night in Des Moines.
The D-Fenders used a 24-4 run early in the game to take a commanding 41-23 lead. The Energy responded with a run of their own, this one of the 13-0 variety to cut the lead to 43-38 with 5:09 remaining the half. L.A. pushed the margin to 55-44 as the two teams headed to the halftime break.
L.A. extended the lead to 61-46 early in the 3rd quarter before Iowa came to life. Led by Paul Harris and Morris Almond, the Energy went on a 19-8 run that was capped by a Quincy Miller three-pointer to narrow the margin to 69-65 with 4:39 left in the 3rd quarter. The hosts continued their inspired play as they tied the game up at 77-77 with one quarter remaining.
In a game that featured 16 lead changes and 15 ties, the inter-conference rivals were knotted at 100-100 with 1:07 left in the game. After two D-Fenders missed shots and two offensive rebounds, L.A. guard Courtney Fortson lost control of the ball. Harris scooped it up and gave Iowa the lead with a resounding slam dunk to send the Energy fans into a frenzy. After a timeout, Energy point guard Chris Wright drew an offensive foul on Elijah Milsap, giving the ball back to Iowa. L.A. was forced to foul, and Almond calmly drilled two free throws to give Iowa the win.
Harris led Iowa with 30 points and 18 rebounds while Almond scored a season high 27. Miller, re-assigned to Iowa by the Denver Nuggets yesterday, added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The win moves the Energy to 4-7 on the season, including 3-1 at home.
The D-Fenders were led by Courtney Fortson and L.A. Lakers assignee Darius Johnson-Odom who each scored 21 points in the loss. L.A. falls to 5-5 on the season.
Iowa outrebounded L.A. 50-37 on the night and made 22 of 25 free throws (88.0%).
The same two teams play tomorrow night in Des Moines at 7pm. The first 500 kids 12 & under receive a replica Energy jersey starting at 6pm. For tickets, call 515-564-8550, visit www.IowaNBA.com or stop by the arena box office.
