Ems Fall in Thriller 1-0
July 3, 2018 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
One mistake can make or break a game for a pitcher. Ryan Williams had one of those days after going six strong innings and only giving up five hits and one run, but the offense could not give him any support as the Ems fell 1-0 in front of 5,021.
Williams (1-3) looked dominate at time for the Ems (7-12), working around AquaSox (11-8) singles in the first, second, and fourth innings. His lone mistake came on a 0-1 pitch to Nick Rodriguez to start the fifth inning, fly ball that left the yard and gave Everett a 1-0 lead.
Williams finished with three strikeouts on the day and gave the ball over to Dalton Geekie. Geekie pitched even better than Williams, going three innings without giving up a run or hit while walking a pair and striking out three.
The Ems for their part out hit the AquaSox, but could not string together a rally. Eugene had runners on base in seven of the nine innings, but did not push across the tying run.
They had an opportunity in the bottom of the second after back-to-back singles by Luis Diaz and Christopher Morel. A fly out brought Gustavo Polanco to the plate, and a ground out saw him safe at first and Diaz safe at third while Morel was out a second. A delyed steal found Polanco in a pickle and Diz raced home. The throw beat him and ended the inning.
Their best chance came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Tyler Durna led off the inning with a single. After a fielder's choice replaced Durna with Polanco, Luis Vazquez singled and moved Polanco to second. A wild pitch by Everett starter Jheyson Caraballo (3-0) moved the runners to second and third with one out.
Caraballo escaped the danger by getting Fernando Kelli to pop out to shallow center and Kwang-Min Kwon to fly out to end the threat.
Eugene begins a series in Boise for the next three days before coming back home and starting a series with Hillsboro on Saturday, July 7th. Tickets can be purchased for that series at Emeraldsbaseball.com.
