Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, Ore. - The Eugene Emeralds jumped out to an early lead and won the rubber match of a three-game series with Boise, 3-1, on Thursday night in front of 3,387 fans at PK Park.
Eugene starter Justin Steele (1-0) picked up the win after allowing just one run on three hits over six innings with six strikeouts. He was perfect through the first three frames. Boise starter Dylan Thompson (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits in five innings. Outfielder Eloy Jimenez and designed hitter Justin Marra (double and triple) each had two hits to lead the Ems.
After Boise had scored first in both of the previous two games of the series, the Emeralds came out swinging on Thursday. Ho-young Son drew a leadoff walk and Eloy Jimenez singled to get the first two batters on base. After an out moved up the runners, first baseman Blake Headley, the Cubs' 20th round pick in 2015, rolled a RBI groundout in his first professional at-bat to score Son. Marra bounced a double over the fence in left center to drive in Jimenez.
Boise got one back in the fourth when Kevin Padlo doubled down the line in left with two outs to plate Carlos Herrera, who started the inning with a single.
The Emeralds went up 3-1 in the bottom half of the fourth when Marra tripled into the right field corner and scored on a groundout by Frandy De La Rosa.
Corbin Hoffner relieved Steele to start the seventh and tossed two scoreless innings. Sam Wilson pitched the ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
Notes: Cubs 2015 10th-round pick Vimael Machin started at third in his debut and singled in his first professional at-bat...20th-round pick Blake Headley started at first and drove in a run on a grounder in his first at-bat.
Up Next: Oscar De La Cruz will start as the Emeralds begin a five-game series with Tri-City (Friday-Tuesday). The Ems will toss Jose Paulino on Saturday, Andin Diaz on Sunday, either Adbert Alzolay or Greyfer Eregua on Monday and Carson Sands on Tuesday.
Upcoming Promos: The Ems will give away special 60th anniversary pennants tomorrow to the first 1,000 fans, sponsored by Valley River Inn. It will also be Flashback Friday, presented by Northwest Toyota Dealers. In celebration of the club's 60th anniversary, all summer long the Ems will honor each decade of the team's existence at every Friday home game.
