KEIZER, Ore. -- Eugene scored nine combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings in the series opener to take a commanding 12-5 win in front of 3,110 at Volcanoes Stadium Thursday night.
Eloy Jimenez blasted a two-run home run off of reliever Rayan Hernandez in the fourth inning that began an impressive Eugene outburst. The Emeralds followed up their four run fourth with a five run fifth inning extending their lead to 12-2.
Miguel Gomez hit a two-run homer of his own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 12-4, but the Volcanoes offense could not close the gap. It was Gomez's fifth home run of the season, and 49th total for Salem-Keizer this season. That marks leads the league.
The Emeralds offense heated up early after an Andrew Ely double plated Donnie Dewees in the first inning. Eugene tacked on two in the second to secure a 3-0 lead, to spoil the first Northwest League start for Grant Watson (0-1, 7.36 ERA).
In the bottom of the second, Salem-Keizer's offense showed some fight by putting up two runs .Chris Shaw reached on a walk and then advanced on a Jose Vizcaino Jr. single and C.J. Hinojosa fly out. With Shaw on third, Oscar De La Cruz (5-3, 3.30) committed his league-leading fifth balk to plate the Volcanoes first run. Two pitches later, Fernando Pujadas doubled in Jose Vizcaino Jr.
The two teams played in front of 3,110 fans that came to honor those who fought and are still fighting cancer as the Volcanoes kicked-off their annual cancer awareness home stand.
Player of the game: Miguel Gomez was a bright spot for the Volcanoes lineup as he has been all year. Before the game, Gomez received his Northwest League Player of the Month trophy after he led the league in batting average, RBI's and hits in the month of July.
Up Next: Tomorrow night the Salem-Keizer and Eugene will face off for their second game of the series with Logan Webb (3-4, 4.53 ERA) and Adbert Alzolay (3-2, 1.46 ERA) set to start. Alzolay has not started against the Volcanoes this season while Webb received a loss in his only start against the Emeralds, despite only allowing one run in six innings pitched.
