Boise Hawks News Release
Hillsboro, Oregon - Marcos Derkes and Brian Mundell provided the power and a combination of five pitchers shut down the Hops hitters as the Hawks took the first game in Hillsboro by a score of 5-3.
The Hawks jumped all over Hops starting pitcher, Cory Reed for four runs in the first inning. After loading the bases, Reed walked Wesley Jones to give the Hawks their first run before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Kevin Padlo to score.
Marcos Derkes followed with a two-run single and Reed's day would come to an end after giving up four runs in just 1/3 of an inning.
In the third inning, Brian Mundell belted a solo home run, his fourth of the year that gave the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
The Hawks bullpen held the Hops scoreless until the eighth inning when Dansby Swanson connected for his first professional baseball home run, a three-run shot that tightened the score at 5-3.
Dylan Thompson entered and didn't allow a hit as he picked up the save and the Hawks picked up the victory.
The Hawks (21-39) and the Hops (35-25) will play ball again tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m.
Notes: The Hawks struck out a season high 20 times... Brian Mundell went 2 for 3 and now has four multi-hit games in the last five games... Marcos Dereks stole three bases on the evening... Drasen Johnson picked up his first win of the season.
