Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, Ore. - Spokane used a two-run homer in the ninth to force extra innings and went on to defeat Eugene, 4-3, on Sunday night in the first of a five-game series at PK Park.
Eugene (14-11, 31-32) dropped into a tie with Hillsboro (14-11) for the lead in the South Division second half standings. The winner of the first half meets the winner of the second half in the first round of the Northwest League playoffs.
Reliever Scott Frazier (1-1) suffered the loss for Eugene after allowing two runs on three hits without recording an out in the top of the ninth.
The Emeralds took the lead in the fourth when Donnie Dewees opened the inning with a triple off the wall in right center, pushing his hit streak to 16 games. He later scored on a wild pitch to give Eugene a 1-0 lead. Spokane answered back in the top of the fifth when Tyler Sanchez singled and eventually came around to score on a passed ball.
That was the only scoring in the game until the bottom of the eighth. After pinch hitter P.J. Higgins drew a leadoff walk, he moved to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. With two outs, Eloy Jimenez crushed a double over the right fielder's head to drive in the game-winning run. Eugene appeared to add some insurance one at-bat later, as Andrew Ely singled in Jimenez to make it a 3-1 lead. Spokane quickly tied it up in the top of the ninth as Sanchez hit a two-run homer to left and the game went into extra innings as Eugene wasted a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth.
Dewees Hit Streak: With his fourth-inning triple, Donnie Dewees extended his hitting streak to 16 games. The 2015 second-round pick is hitting .351 (26-for-74) during the streak, which started on Aug. 8.
Up Next: The Emeralds meet Spokane for the second of a five-game series on Monday night. It is Good Karma Monday, with fans allowed to name their own price for tickets (starting at $1). Half of the ticket proceeds will be donated to charity, with Children's Miracle Network benefitting this week. Northwest Community Credit Union is the proud sponsor of Good Karma Monday.
