Eugene Emeralds News Release

EUGENE, OR - After enjoying a partnership for the past 4 seasons, the Eugene Emeralds announced today that they will continue their player-development partnership and remain the Chicago Cubs' Short Season-A affiliate through 2022. The commitment of four years represents that strong relationship forged between the Ems and Cubs.

"We are incredibly excited to continue our relationship with the Cubs, as they have been tremendous in their support of our organization in Eugene," said Allan Benavides, General Manager of the Ems. "We have enjoyed unprecedented success in the past 4 seasons and look forward to even more in the near future."

"We started this partnership with the Eugene organization in 2015, and have really enjoyed seeing the work Allan Benavides and the Emeralds front office have done to help develop our young players both on and off the field," said Jason McLeod, the Cubs Senior Vice President of Scouting and Player Development. "Additionally, Eugene continues to offer our players the best facilities to be found at the short-season level, and we are pleased this relationship will continue through at least the 2022 season."

Every season as a Cubs' affiliate, the Ems have been a Northwest League playoff contender. After missing on the postseason by one game in 2015, the Emeralds dominated the 2016 season, winning their first NWL Championship in over 40 years that summer, with a return to the Championship series in 2017.

The Eugene Emeralds are the short-season Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The 2017 Emeralds followed an historic 2016 season with another Northwest League playoff appearance in 2017, defeating the Hillsboro Hops in the Semi-Finals before falling to the Vancouver Canadians in the Championship Series 3 games to 1. This marked the second consecutive season the Ems reached the NWL playoffs, the first time the franchise accomplished that feat since 1985-86. The Eugene Emeralds are dedicated to providing the best in family entertainment, and have been nominated for the Larry MacPhail Award for a seventh consecutive year.
