Eugene Emeralds News Release
Two walks and a hit batter led to four runs as the Eugene Emeralds showed off their power stroke once again, with Jonathan Sierra crushing a grand slam in the fourth inning. That gave the Ems a lead they would not surrender leading to a 6-1 victory over the Spokane Indians with 3,688 looking on at PK Park.
Finding themselves down 1-0 in the fourth, the Ems (5-6, 19-30) got the inning rolling when Andy Weber got hit by a pitch. Grant Fennell struck out before Spokane (6-5, 22-27) starter Scott Engler (2-4) walked Luke Reynolds and Nelson Velazquez to load the bases for Sierra.
After a couple of foul balls, Sierra got one on the barrel, launching a no-doubt shot into the Ems bullpen in right field.
That would be all the Ems pitching staff would need, as they shut the Indians down for the final five frames. Brailyn Marquez started but did not go five innings to get the win. He gave up a solo homer in the third inning to Sterling Joseph but did not give up much else.
Marquez finished with two hits one run, one walk, and five strikeouts.
Cam Sanders pitched a perfect fifth with a strikeout, and Eugenio Palma got his third win after going two innings, giving up one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts. Sean Barry pitched the final two frames, striking out a pair with one hit.
The Ems extended their lead by one in each of the next two innings, both on sac flys. Weber drove in Levi Jordan after Jordan led off the fifth with a triple and Erick Gonzalez scored Velazquez in the sixth.
Eugene will look to take the series on Saturday, sending Eury Ramos to the mound. It is a Growler giveaway to the first 100 fans 21 or over. Get your tickets now at emeraldsbaseball.com.
