New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH - Brad Emaus went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk, a run and a stolen base, and Darin Mastroianni added two hits and two runs scored, but the Binghamton Mets spoiled United Way Opening Day at Merchantsauto.com Stadium by posting a 7-6 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Thursday night.
The Mets (5-3) took the opener of the four-game series by getting to losing pitcher Zach Stewart in the third and fourth innings. Trailing 3-1 in the third, Nick Evans (2-for-5, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R) launched a two-out, three-run homer, his third, into the Poultry Products Dinner in the Den, putting Binghamton on top, 4-3.
The lead ballooned to 7-3 when Stewart was knocked out of the box in the fourth. Zach Lutz (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) led off the frame with his second homer; Mike Nickeas (2-for-4, 2B, RBI, R) added an RBI double and Kirk Nieuwenhuis (1-for-5, 2B, RBI) capped the scoring with an RBI double off reliever Trystan Magnuson.
All seven runs were charged to Stewart (0-1), who yielded nine hits and walked four in 4.1 innings to suffer his first career Double-A loss.
Scott Shaw (1-0) shook off a rough start to register his first career Double-A victory. The right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in five innings, retiring the final eight batters he faced. Shaw fanned five.
John Lujan struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect ninth to notch his second save in two opportunities.
Trailing 7-3 in the sixth, the Fisher Cats (4-3) rallied for two runs against reliever Clint Everts. Emaus (walk) scored from third on a wild pitch, and Eric Thames (2-for-4, R), who singled, scored on a double to right by Adam Loewen (1-for-4, 2B, RBI), cutting Binghamton's lead to 7-5.
Emaus made it 7-6 with a run-scoring single off Roy Merritt in the bottom of the seventh that scored Mastroianni (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R), who leads the Eastern League with nine runs, including at least one in all seven games this season.
New Hampshire erased an early 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the first against Shaw when Mastroianni and Calix Crabbe (1-for-4, 2B, SAC, RBI, R) began the frame with back-to-back doubles to tie the game. Emaus' RBI single plated Crabbe for a 2-1 lead.
The Fisher Cats moved ahead, 3-1, against Shaw in the second when Brian Jeroloman (1-for-4, HR) lofted a solo homer, his first, over the right field wall.
The Fisher Cats take on the Mets in game two of their four-game series Friday night at 6:35pm with New Hampshire right-hander Marty McLeary (0-0, 6.00) squaring off against Binghamton left-hander Mike Antonini (0-1, 12.27) at 6:35pm.
