Chesapeake Baysox News Release

AKRON, Ohio - The Bowie Baysox unleashed 16 hits on the Akron Aeros in a 9-1 victory that was Bowie's most comprehensive win yet in 2010. The Baysox moved to 7-1, a start that is tied with the 1997 Baysox for the hottest in franchise history and has put them neck-and-neck with the Altoona Curve for the early division lead. Their six-game winning streak has already bested last year's best streak of five wins that came from May 15-20.

Bowie was dominant in every facet of the game. Every player in the lineup got a hit, with five players getting multiple hits; four double plays and no errors backed up the offensive fireworks; Chorye Spoone pitched six innings with one earned run; and Zach Clark sealed the deal with a three-inning save on the day he was promoted to the Baysox from Aberdeen. It was Spoone's first win since June 28, 2008, just weeks before he was shut down with shoulder pain that would require surgery to repair and all of 2009 to recover and pick up where he left off with the Baysox.

Akron got the scoring started in the first inning with a towering home run to right field by Nick Weglarz with two outs, but it was all the scoring they would muster as the Baysox pitchers went into lockdown on the defending Eastern League champions. Spoone finished the evening with just three hits and a 1.17 WHIP.

The Baysox were hitless through the first two innings but tied things up in the third when right fielder Miguel Abreu singled to center field to drive in shortstop Pedro Florimon. They blew the game open in the sixth inning with four runs off of four hits, including a double by 2009 Carolina League MVP Brandon Waring and a two-RBI double by second baseman Ryan Adams.

It was the second consecutive big game for Adams, who made a critical play in the 11th inning of Wednesday's 1-0 win over Harrisburg to get Bowie out of a bases-loaded jam before hitting a walk-off two-out RBI double in the 12th to win the game. Tonight, Adams went four for five with two doubles and two RBI and was involved in two of the Baysox four double plays.

Another offensive wave came in the top of the eighth inning, as the Baysox scored four more runs off of five hits. Catcher Phil Britton, Adams, Florimon and center fielder Danny Figueroa each singled in consecutive at-bats to produce two runs before Robbie Widlansky hit a two-RBI double to extend his hit streak to five games.

Zach Clark made his triumphant return to the mound for the Baysox with a three-inning, two-hit, no-walk save; his first save since June 2008 with class-A Frederick. Clark was added to Bowie's active roster to take the place of reliever Armando Gabino, who was transferred to AAA Norfolk.

The Baysox take on the Aeros again Friday at Canal Park in Akron at 7:05 p.m. and, with another win, will be off to their best start in all 18 years of Baysox Baseball. They return to Bowie on April 22 for a home stand that includes fireworks shows on the 23rd and 24th presented by Educational Systems Federal Credit Union.
