Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - October 4, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals announced today that they have agreed to terms with forward Philip-Michael Devos for the 2013-14 season. In conjunction, the Jackals announced their 2013 training camp roster.
Devos has 50 points over two AHL seasons.
"Philip-Michael is an elite player who will really help our hockey team. He excels in both ends of the rink and is a proven winner at every level he has played at," said Jackals head coach Dwight Mullins.
Devos, 23, comes to the Jackals after attending training training camp with the American Hockey League's St. John's IceCaps. A third-year pro out of Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Devos has spent the majority of the last two years in the AHL with Norfolk and Syracuse. He signed a two-year AHL agreement after finishing his junior career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and helped Norfolk win the Calder Cup in 2012, and then reached the 2013 Calder Cup final with Syracuse.
During his time in the AHL Devos has racked up 50 points (14 goals, 36 assists), 52 penalty minutes, and a +31 rating in 122 combined games for the Admirals and Crunch. He added seven points (1 goal, 6 assists) in 27 Calder Cup games.
This will not be the first go-around for Devos in the ECHL, though. As a rookie in 2011-12 he logged 20 points (6 goals, 14 assists) in 22 games for the Florida Everblades.
Prior to turning pro, Devos, a 5-11, 185-pound center, had a productive four-year career in the QMJHL. Over 325 games, primarily with the Victoriaville Tigres, he notched 294 points (112 goals, 182 assists), 194 penalty minutes, and a +45 rating.
Devos was awarded the Jean Beliveau Trophy (most points, 114), Frank J. Selke Trophy (QMJHL Most Sportsmanlike Player), CHL Sportsman of the Year, and QMJHL Second All-Star Team following a 2010-11 season which saw him put up 47 goals and 67 assists in 68 combined games between Victoriaville and Gatineau. In the 2011 postseason he tied current Ottawa Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau for the team lead with 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 24 games and helped the Olympiques reach the league finals.
"From the get-go, when it became apparent things wouldn't work out in Saint John's, Elmira showed the most interest in me," said Devos. "I appreciated that, along with Coach Mullins' honesty so I'm excited to get started. I want to have a big role on the team and do everything I can to help the Jackals win. At the end of the day it's all about helping Elmira win a championship," continued Devos.
In addition to signing Devos, the Jackals unveiled their full training camp roster today. The Jackals opened camp at First Arena this morning with 35 players on their roster. The training camp roster is comprised of three goaltenders, 12 defensemen, and 20 forwards.
