Aces Re-Sign Defenseman Corey Syvret
October 4, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Alaska Aces have re-signed defenseman Corey Syvret (SIHV-ret) for the 2013-14 season, Aces head coach Rob Murray announced today.
Syvret, 24, is the 14th player back from last season's Aces squad that captured their third straight Brabham Cup title for the league's top regular season record. He is the fifth returning defenseman that helped the Aces rank second in the ECHL for fewest goals allowed per game (2.3).
"Corey was an integral part of our defensive backbone and tremendous in many situations for us last season," said Murray. "His rugged approach on every shift, along with a willingness to make the smart and simple play help us play with confidence in our zone. He transformed his game offensively and we're thrilled to have him back this season."
The 6-foot, 183-pound blueliner posted 18 points (1g-17a) and a +10 rating in 32 games for the Aces last season. He also suited up in 11 games at the American Hockey League level and collected 18 penalty minutes for the Toronto Marlies.
The Millgrove, Ontario native returned for the Kelly Cup Playoffs to notch four assists in 11 games for Alaska.
Syvret has skated in 119 career ECHL games with the Aces, Trenton Titans and Kalamazoo Wings and picked up 28 points and 98 penalty minutes. He has six points in 15 career Kelly Cup Playoff games and also carries 18 career games at the AHL level with Toronto, Portland and Rochester with one assist and 22 penalty minutes.
He suited up in 296 career games in the Ontario Hockey League with the Guelph Storm and London Knights with 93 points and 256 penalty minutes.
Syvret was originally selected by the Florida Panthers in the sixth round (181st overall) in the 2007 National Hockey League Entry Draft. His brother, Danny, has skated in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and Anaheim Ducks.
The Aces will begin their 2013-14 season at home on Friday, Oct. 18 at Sullivan Arena when they host the San Francisco Bulls. Season ticket and sponsorship packages are currently available through the Aces office at 15th & Gambell.
