Elder, Smith help end Toros' losing streak

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 19, 2006 - BJ Elder scored 32 points and Jamar Smith added 23 points and eight rebounds as the Toros defeated the Tulsa 66ers 105-89 on Friday night at the Austin Convention Center. The Toros (6-16) snapped a two game losing streak as Tulsa (10-13) lost its third game in a row.

The Toros used the first quarter to help build a lead that it would never relinquish. BJ Elder had 12 of his 32 points in the quarter to help Austin lead 28-17 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Loren Woods scored eight points and helped the Toros build a 53-39 advantage at halftime.

Will Conroy's free throws would cut the Toros lead to only nine points with 9:41 remaining in the third quarter. Austin wouldn't let the 66ers get any closer in the game as the Toros continued to build their cushion the rest of the game and led by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter.

James White, on assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, scored 16 points and a team-high four assists in 40 minutes of play for the Toros. Loren Woods continued his strong play with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and collected 10 rebounds.

Tulsa was led in scoring by Mike Hall's 19 points. The 66ers had four other players scoring in double figures including Alan Anderson (15), Denham Brown (14) and Desmon Farmer (13). Will Conroy scored 16 points and dished out a game-high nine assists.

The Toros and the 66ers play the second game of their weekend double header tomorrow night at 7:00 pm at the Austin Convention Center.
