Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, MD - A blown lead in the eighth inning hindered the Frederick Keys (11-21, 39-61) as they dropped an extra-inning contest 6-5 against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (18-16, 39-62) on Wednesday night at Nymeo Field. Several defensive miscues and three walks saw a four-run lead evaporate as the Pelicans were able to tie the game 5-5 and send it to extras. Kevonte Mitchell then hit an infield single to bring in the winning run. The Keys had a chance in the ninth inning but stranded the bases loaded.

The top of the eighth inning started off poorly for the Keys. Delvin Zinn reached on a throwing error from Jomar Reyes and Cam Balego climbed aboard after a fielder's choice resulted in no-outs. Another Reyes' throwing error brought home the innings' first run and put runners at the corners for Tyler Durna, who singled in a run to make it a 5-3 game.

David Lebron induced a fly-out for the first out but then walked the next two batters. He allowed four runs, none of which were earned, while striking out four batters over 2.1 innings. He exited the game with the tying run at third base.

Zach Matson (1-1) came in relief of Lebron and got a fly-out for the second out of the frame but then walked Carlos Sepulveda to bring in the tying run. Matson allowed the unearned run in the 10th inning and was dealt the loss. He struck out four and walked a pair in 2.2 innings.

The Pelicans took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Cameron Bishop walked a pair, one of which Tyler Payne knocked in on a fielder's choice.

The Keys' starter pitched well after that. Bishop struck out four total and forced a ground-ball double play in the fourth inning, completing five innings on 68 pitches. He was in line for the win.

The Keys jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. J.C. Escarra hit a two-out single to get things started as the Keys followed with three-straight extra-base hits. Robert Nuestrom lined a double into left field to tie the game and Cadyn Grenier followed with an RBI double of his own. Pat Dorrian then blasted a triple to dead centerfield that gave the Keys a 3-1 lead.

Escarra added two more runs on a two-out single in the fifth inning to make it 5-1 Keys.

Alexander Vargas completed the fifth after allowing the five runs on seven hits. All five runs came with two-outs.

Garrett Kelly (1-0) picked up the win after pitching scoreless ninth and 10th innings. He walked two batters and struck out three in his first win this season.

Grenier finished with two doubles while Escarra had two RBIs on two hits.

The Keys finish their three-game set with the Pelicans on Thursday, July 25 before they welcome in the Potomac Nationals. RHP Blaine Knight (0-7, 6.14) takes the mound for Frederick opposite RHP Javier Assad (3-7, 3.95) for Myrtle Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00pm, with pregame coverage starting at 11:45am on frederickkeys.com and the Tune In radio app.
