State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Tommy Edman smashed his fourth home run of the season, but a four-run first inning from the Williamsport Crosscutters enabled them to take a 5-1 decision over the State College Spikes on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Despite the loss, State College (27-14) still held on to the best record in the New York-Penn League, with a two-game lead on Williamsport (25-16) in the Pinckney Division.
Edman's blast off Williamsport starter Cole Irvin (2-1) led off the bottom of the first inning. The long ball got back a run for the Spikes after the Crosscutters' fast start.
David Martinelli plated the game's first run for Williamsport with a single. Four batters later, Luke Maglich then brought in three runs with a bases-loaded triple.
The Crosscutters then added a run in the third when an error after a Luke Williams single brought in Brett Barbier.
Spikes starter Bryan Dobzanski (3-4) took the loss after yielding all five Williamsport runs, four of them earned, on seven hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings. Dobzanski also struck out five batters in the effort.
Andy Young produced two hits, including a double, and added a walk and a stolen base for State College.
Williamsport leadoff hitter Mark Laird collected four hits on the night.
Irvin earned the win after yielding one run on three total hits and a walk over five innings of work. The southpaw also recorded five strikeouts.
The crowd at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park also included 156 dogs for the second Bark in the Park Night of the season, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital, NEWSRADIO 1390 WRSC and the Centre Daily Times.
The Spikes now welcome a new opponent to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, as the West Virginia Black Bears (Pittsburgh Pirates) come to town for the opener of a three-game series. Game time is set for 6:05 p.m.
State College will send left-hander Dewin Perez (2-2) to the mound, while West Virginia will go with right-hander James Marvel (3-4).
