NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers (22-19) pitching staff had the ValleyCats (22-19) number on Saturday night in the rubber match of their three game series, as they allowed only two runs on five hits to defeat Tri-City 8-2.

Connecticut's offense touched up 'Cats pitching for eight runs on 10 hits, as left fielder Sam Machones led the way with a 3-for-4 night at the plate and two RBI, falling just a home run away from the cycle.

The Tigers scored twice in the first and two more in the fourth off of 'Cats starter Edgardo Sandoval (0-2), who received the loss.

Tri-City cut the lead in half in the sixth inning on a double by Taylor Jones, and RBI singles by Brauly Mejia and Tyler Wolfe. However, the ValleyCats could muster no more runs.

The 'Cats left 11 men on base in the contest, going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Mejia was the only Tri-City batter with a multi-hit game, as the offense continues to struggle.

The ValleyCats are batting .219 in the last five games, but still cling to a share of the league lead alongside Lowell, both hitting at a .263 clip on the season.

Makay Nelson, making his debut for the 'Cats after joining the club from full-season Class A Quad Cities, allowed four runs, three of them earned, while giving up five hits in his three innings of work.

Defensively, the 'Cats committed three errors which accounted for two of the Tigers eight runs.

With the loss, the ValleyCats are now tied with Connecticut for second place in the Stedler Division, two games behind the Lowell Spinners.

The 'Cats and Spinners begin a three game series at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Sunday evening. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. The ValleyCats will wear "Where's Waldo - jerseys to be raffled off during the game. Proceeds will benefit Make-A-Wish of Northeast New York.

Ticket are still available, and can be purchased online at tcvalleycats.com, by phone at 518-629-CATS, or by visiting the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium box office.
