The Auburn Doubledays, Single-A Short Season affiliate of the Washington Nationals, walked off against the West Virginia Black Bears, 3-2, on Saturday night. With runners on the corners in the bottom of the ninth inning, Doubledays outfielder Jack Sundberg singled up the middle to score the game-winning run.
West Virginia (20-21) got on the board first in the top of the first inning. Stephen Alemais and Clark Eagan started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second base. Austin Meadows then grounded into a force out in which Eagan was out at second base, but Alemais was safe at third base and Meadows reached first base. Will Craig followed with a double to left field that scored Alemais to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
Auburn (18-23) responded in the bottom of the first inning. Blake Perkins led off with a single. Jake Noll followed by hammering a ball over the left-field wall for a two-run home run that put the Doubledays up 2-1.
The Black Bears tied the game in the fifth inning. Arden Pabst worked a walk to lead off the inning. Moore then struck out and Alemais flew out to right field for the first two outs of the inning. Eagan followed with a triple that scored Pabst to tie the game at two.
The Doubledays won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Tres Barrera led off with a single up the middle. Ryan Ripken then grounded into a fielder's choice in which Barrera was out at second base, but Ripken was safe at first base. Clayton Brandt then grounded a ball to first that first baseman, Albert Baur, misplayed. Ripken moved to third base on the play and Brandt was safe at first because of the error. Sundberg followed with a single to center field that scored Ripken from third base and gave the Doubledays a 3-2 walk-off win.
The Doubledays hit the road and begin a three-game series against the Staten Island Yankees on Sunday. Right-hander Dane Dunning will start for Auburn against Staten Island right-hander Simon De la Rosa. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
