Ebarb, bullpen lead Lansing past Dayton

LANSING - C.J. Ebarb's double in the eighth inning completed a comeback win for the Lansing Lugnuts Monday night, as they tripped up the Dayton Dragons 3-2 in front of 4,921 fans at Oldsmobile Park.

The game was tied in the eighth before Lansing caught a break and took advantage to plate the winning run. With two men out, Jonathan Baksh swung and missed at strike three, but advanced to first base on a wild pitch from Dayton reliever Jeff Jeffords to keep the inning alive. Baksh followed that by swiping second base despite Jeffords's pitch out to home plate. Jonathan Jaspe was then intentionally walked, bringing up the left-handed hitting C.J. Ebarb.

Southpaw Aguido Gonzalez was summoned into the game to face Ebarb, but gave up a double that Ebarb pulled down the first base line. The hit plated Baksh and put Lansing ahead 3-2.

It was Ebarb's third hit of the game, as he finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Lugnuts had trailed 2-0 in the fifth before Ebarb walked and scored on Manny Rodriguez's double into left-center field, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Justin Jackson added an RBI single later in the frame that brought Rodriguez home to tie the game at 2-2.

Lansing's bullpen was able shut down Dayton, as they ran their streak to 18 1/3 consecutive innings of shutout baseball. Edgar Estanga hurled three innings of one-hit relief, while Frank Gailey (4-0) allowed a hit over the final two frames en route to the win.

Both of Dayton's runs came against Lansing starter Brian Letko, but only one was earned. Keltavious Jones reached on an error and scored in the third inning when Neftali Soto singled into left, making it 1-0.

The Dragons other run crossed in the top half of the fifth on a Denis Phipps sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 2-0.

Juan Rafael pitched well for the Dragons in his start, as he gave up two runs over six innings.

Jeffords (3-5) took the loss in relief after allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Lansing (73-60, 34-29) and Dayton (62-69, 34-29) will continue the series Tuesday night. Chi-Hung Cheng (5-8, 4.60) will get the start for Lansing, while Luis Montano (11-8, 4.01) will hurl for the Dragons. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
