West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps, in conjunction with the Detroit Tigers, announced today that LHP Jon Kibler will be placed on the disabled list, retroactive to August 23. Infielder Roger Tomas will be activated from the disabled list for tonight's game as the corresponding move to Kibler.
Kibler has been the best pitcher in the Midwest League this season, leading the league in wins (14), ERA (1.75) and innings pitched (154.1). The southpaw from Freeland, Md., has been even more outstanding at Fifth Third Ballpark, posting a 10-2 record with 1.46 ERA. Kibler fired two complete games this season and was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week twice along with the Tigers Minor League Pitcher of the Month in May.
By minor league rule, a player must remain on the disabled list for at least seven days, which makes Kibler's earliest return date August 30. Kibler is expected to return and be available in time for the Midwest League playoffs beginning September 3.
Tomas returns to the Whitecaps after recovering from a broken hamate bone (hand) he suffered in late June. Tomas was one of the top hitters in the Midwest League at the time of his injury, hitting .314 (59-for-188) with 19 RBI and 27 runs scored through 52 games. His last game played with West Michigan was June 28 against Lansing.
