Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GRAND CHUTE, WI - A trio of Kernels helped Cedar Rapids keep on pace for a Midwest League playoff spot. The Kernels maintained their four game lead for the second half Western Division Wild Card spot with a 6-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Trevor Reckling pitched six solid innings, Hector Estrella had four hits, and Julio Perez homered to lead the way.

Cedar Rapids (36-27 second half, 68-63 overall) used their speed to grab an early 2-0 lead. Clay Fuller doubled with one out and Andrew Romine drew a walk. The two pulled a double steal to move up a base. Rattler starting pitcher Jose Jimenez threw a wild pitch to allow Fuller to score and Romine to take third base. Romine, the Midwest League leader in stolen bases, would score on an high chopper back to the mound.

Wisconsin (22-41, 53-76) got a big two-out hit from Joe Dunigan to get the game back to even. Dunigan lined a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the fourth inning. That long ball was Dunigan's thirteenth homer of the season.

Those were the only runs Wisconsin would get against the Kernel starter. Reckling struck out six, walked one, and allowed three hits on the way to his tenth win of the season.

But, the Kernels answered with a two-run homer of their own in the top of the fifth. Estrella singled to start the inning against Rattler reliever Joe Kantakevich. Then, Perez lined a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall for his fourteenth homer of the season and a 4-2 lead.

Cedar Rapids added to their lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Estrella singled, his third hit of the night, to start the inning. One out later, Jeremy Moore tripled into the right field corner and Estrella scored. An RBI single by Gabe Jacobo made the score 6-2.

Wisconsin tried to rally in the seventh as they loaded the bases on two outs against Kernel reliever Sammy Leon. But, Leon got the final out of the frame with a strike out to leave the bases full of Rattlers.

Then, Leon got the first out of the eighth inning, before Ysmael Carmona finished off the game by getting the final five outs.

Quad Cities beat Western Division leading Burlington by a final of 11-4 tonight. The Kernels are still four games up on Quad Cities for the second half Western Division Wild Card. Cedar Rapids now trails first place Burlington by 3-1/2 games. There are seven games remaining in the regular season.

Game two of the series is Tuesday night. Keith Renaud (1-4, 5.15) gets the start for Wisconsin. Jose Perez (0-2, 5.79) is slated to start for Cedar Rapids.

Tuesday is another Bang For Your Buck Night with soda, hot dogs, and beers available for $1. Game time is 7:05pm.
