Quakes to Face Viking In La Manga Cup

After winning their first round group in the La Manga Cup in Spain, the Earthquakes will face a familiar opponent, Viking Stavangar (Norway), in the semifinals of the competition. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, March 2 at 12 p.m. in Spain. San Jose played Viking last year at La Manga in group play and lost 3-1 with Ronnie Ekelund netting the lone goal for the Quakes. The Quakes won their first two games in the preseason La Manga Tournament, defeating Gif Sundsval 3-1 on Feb. 25 behind goals from Dwayne De Rosario, Jamil Walker and Landon Donovan. San Jose advanced into the semifinals of the tournament with a 2-1 win over Stabaek on Feb. 28 behind goals from Walker and Brian Ching.

Injury Report

The Quakes welcomed Todd Dunivant (left quad strain) and Troy Dayak (stiff neck) back into training on Monday. Both missed last Saturday's match due to injury, but the pair trained without incident and should be available to play on Tuesday against Viking. Defender Eddie Robinson continues to do rehab exercises, but has not started running as he comes back from a sprained LCL in his right knee.

Quakes Have Hart In Fold

Midfielder/Defender Wes Hart joined the Quakes this past weekend via a trade with the Colorado Rapids for a conditional draft pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. Hart played in his first preseason match on Saturday against Stabaek. The four-year MLS veteran entered in the 65th minute against Stabaek and played solidly to help the Quakes defeat the Norwegian side. Hart, a University of Washington alum and a Colorado native, has had a comfortable transition to the team as he has strong connections to four Quakes players. Craig Waibel and Ian Russell both played for the University of Washington, while Brian Mullan and Todd Dunivant both played for Hart's youth club team the Colorado Rush.

Donovan and Mulrooney Named To U.S. National Team For Game vs. Haiti

San Jose Earthquakes forward Landon Donovan and midfielder Richard Mulrooney have been named to the United States National Team's 18-player roster for an exhibition match against Haiti on March 13 at The Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla. Donovan, 21, re-joins the U.S. National Team after spending a week training with the Earthquakes in Spain at the La Manga Cup. Donovan played for the U.S. most recently in a 1-0 loss to Holland on Feb. 18 in Amsterdam. Mulrooney returns to the U.S. National team after also training with the Quakes in Spain. The midfielder spent a week practicing with the U.S. team in Bradenton, Fla., prior to the Holland match on Feb. 18, but was not included on the final roster for the game. Mulrooney made his 13th international appearance on Jan. 18 against Denmark.

Donovan Returns Home

Forward Landon Donovan caught a plane early in the morning of Friday, Feb. 27 from Alicante to Madrid and arrived in Los Angeles later that night for some much deserved vacation time after spending much of the off-season training with the U.S. National Team and the U.S. Under-23 Team. Donovan will rejoin the team after the U.S. National Team game against Haiti.

Mulrooney to Return to San Jose

Dominic Kinnear has also given Richard Mulrooney permission to leave La Manga early and the Quakes midfielder arrived in the Bay Area late on Sunday, Feb. 29. Like Donovan, Mulrooney has spent much of the year in national team camps and has been called in again to the national team for the match against Haiti. He will rejoin the Quakes after that match.
