New York Red Bulls News Release
SECAUCUS, NJ (Tuesday, March 2, 2004) - The MetroStars announced today that they will meet the Long Island Rough Riders, of the USL Pro-Select League, in an exhibition match at Mitchel Stadium on Tuesday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
"This is a great way to showcase the best soccer in the country to the Long Island community," said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. "The MetroStars see this as a way for the team to meet a quality opponent in an exhibition match during the regular season. We hope to use this match as preparation for a successful post season run."
This announcement comes in conjunction with the recently announced marketing partnership between the two clubs.
"The Rough Riders are proud to host this match on Long Island," said Rough Riders General Manager Jim Kilmeade. "The MetroStars are a tremendous club and it will be a great test for our guys. Most importantly, the fans of Long Island and Metro NY deserve this match."
The game will mark the first time that the Metros have played the Rough Riders since August 7, 2002, when "Red and Black" hosted the Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The MetroStars fell to the Crew 2-1 in that contest, despite receiving a goal from Rodrigo Faria. A crowd of 8, 314 came to the Long Island complex to support the Metros.
