November 2, 2020 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
San Jose Earthquakes News Release

The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Real Salt Lake 2-0 last Wednesday at Earthquakes Stadium. The Quakes currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, with standings being determined by points per game average.

The match between the Quakes and LAFC, scheduled to take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, was postponed due to three positive COVID-19 tests among the LAFC player group last week. MLS has yet to determine whether the match will be rescheduled prior to Sunday's season finale.

San Jose will face Seattle Sounders FC as part of Decision Day on Sunday, Nov. 8. The match kicks off from CenturyLink Field at 3:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

EARTHQUAKES NOTES

Push for the Playoffs

San Jose now holds a 7-8-6 record in the 2020 regular season and sit above the playoff line in eighth place (1.29 points per game).

Positive Stretch

The Earthquakes hold a 5-2-1 record in their last eight matches, tied for the second-best record in the league during that span.

Assists Leader

Midfielder Cristian Espinoza has a team-high eight assists, tied for third most in MLS.

Difference Maker

Goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski ranks fourth in MLS in goals against average and tied for third in winning percentage among all goalkeepers in MLS with at least nine starts.

NEXT GAME VS. SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (11/8)

Decision Day

San Jose will look to clinch a spot in the Audi 2020 MLS Playoffs against Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday. Seattle has already clinched their ticket, while San Jose is in a four-team race with the Colorado Rapids, LA Galaxy, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Playoffs Record

The last time the Quakes made it to the MLS Playoffs was in 2017. If San Jose clinches a spot this Sunday, it would make it the Quakes' tenth MLS Playoff appearance in club history.

Regular Season Finale

The Quakes will face the Sounders on Sunday for the fourth time this year, most recently earning a scoreless home draw at Earthquakes Stadium on Oct. 18. The last time San Jose defeated Seattle at CenturyLink Field was on June 20, 2015 (2-0).

Scoring Leader

Forward Chris Wondolowski, who is coming from scoring two goals in the last game against Real Salt Lake, has scored 12 goals all-time against Seattle, most in MLS history. Only one other active MLS player has more than five goals against Sounders FC (Fanendo Adi - 8).

LAST GAME VS. REAL SALT LAKE (10/28)

Strong at Home

The Quakes are now 5-1-1 in seven matches against Real Salt Lake at Earthquakes Stadium.

Age is Just a Number

Forward Chris Wondolowski scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season and 164th and 165th of his MLS career last Wednesday, extending his own league record. His first goal was the game-winner, the 45th of his career, extending his own league record. In addition, his six goals this season are a team high.

Spooky Season

Wondo's brace also marked his 25th and 26th career goals during the month of October, 12 more than any other player in MLS history. Wondolowski now has 24 career multi-goal games, second most in MLS history (Landon Donovan - 32).

Making History

Midfielder Shea Salinas tallied an assist on Chris Wondolowski's second goal, marking his first assist of the season and 50th of his MLS career. He has now tallied 47 assists as a member of the Quakes, tied for the most in club history (Ronald Cerritos), with 14 of those assists coming on goals by Chris Wondolowski.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Earthquakes vs. LAFC Match Postponed

The match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Los Angeles Football Club scheduled to take place Sunday, Nov. 1, was postponed. Earlier last week, LAFC announced three positive cases of COVID-19 among their player group. While the remaining players and staff have continued to test negative, including last Friday, out of an abundance of caution, the match has been postponed to allow for additional testing and evaluation. Major League Soccer is evaluating whether the match can be rescheduled prior to Decision Day presented by AT&T, which takes place Nov. 8.

RENO 1868 FC UPDATES

Reno 1868 FC announced last Friday that defender Sam Gleadle, midfielder Kevin Partida and forward Foster Langsdorf have all signed with Minnesota United FC. The trio heading to Minnesota makes two straight offseasons featuring a Reno player signing in MLS. Last season, forward Danny Musovski signed with LAFC.

Gleadle, Partida and Langsdorf appeared in all 18 games for Reno in 2020, on the pitch for a combined total of more than 4,000 minutes and scoring 17 goals to go with six assists.

Earlier last week, midfielders Christiano François and Kevin Partida earned spots in the USL Championship's Second All League team. François and Partida become the fifth and sixth players in Reno's history to be named to an All-League team, including Corey Hertzog after last season.

In addition, head coach Ian Russell was named one of three finalists for the 2020 USL Championship Coach of the Year. Russell has been named a finalist after three of his first four seasons at the helm in Reno, including 2019. This season, Russell guided Reno to an 11-2-3 record, good for the top overall seed in the playoffs and scored the most regular-season goals in the league.
