The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday, marking their third straight victory. The Quakes currently sit in second place (3-1-0, 9 pts.) in the Western Conference, just one point behind Seattle Sounders FC, their opponent on Wednesday.

Forward Chris Wondolowski, 38, was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 4 after entering last Friday's match as a substitute in the 72nd minute and scoring two goals to lift San Jose to a come-from-behind victory. San Jose has now had a player receive the Player of the Week award in two straight weeks, and three times in the last seven weeks dating back to 2020.

The Earthquakes will now host a pair of matches this week at PayPal Park, beginning on Wednesday, May 12 vs. Seattle Sounders FC, presented by Fastmetrics, and then the Portland Timbers on Saturday, May 15, presented by Rotten Robbie.

Wednesday's kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Bay Area, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF. Saturday's match is slated for 7:00 p.m. PT and will be broadcast on NBC Sports California, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose became the first team to defeat Real Salt Lake this season. RSL was the last team in MLS with a perfect record (2-0-0) prior to Friday.

Defying the Odds on the Road

The Quakes have now won eight matches away from home (road or neutral site) under head coach Matias Almeyda, conceding the first goal in six of them.

Never Say Die

San Jose has the most come-from-behind wins (9) in MLS since the start of the 2019 regular season.

Winning Mentality

The Quakes defeated Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium for the first time since Sept. 21, 2013, snapping a six-match winless streak (0-3-3).

He's Back

Chris Wondolowski scored his first and second goals of the season and 167th and 168th of his MLS career, extending his own career record. Wondolowski has now scored five goals in his last six appearances, with four of those goals coming vs. Real Salt Lake. It marked his 25th career multi-goal game, second most in MLS history (Landon Donovan - 32). His second goal was the game-winner, the 46th of his career, extending his own league record. Wondolowski has now scored 12 career goals vs. Real Salt Lake, most in MLS history.

His Grain of Sand

Carlos Fierro tallied the assist on Wondolowski's second goal. It marked his second assist of the season and fifth of his MLS career. It also marked the first game-winning assist of his MLS career.

Welcome Back

Defender Marcos Lopez returned to action after missing the last two matches to injury, starting and playing 66 minutes.

Seattle Sounders FC currently sit in first (3-0-1, 10 pts.) in the Western Conference standings. Seattle remains the only unbeaten team in the Western Conference in 2021.
