Last Game
Earthquakes 2, Los Angeles Galaxy 1; June 22, 2009; Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum: Oakland, Calif.
The San Jose Earthquakes defeated their arch-rivals the LA Galaxy 2-1 at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Pablo Campos' penalty kick in the sixth minute -- his second strike against the Galaxy this season -- staked the Quakes to an early lead. His knockdown then allowed Ryan Johnson to double the home side's advantage in the 54th minute. Jovan Kirovski pulled a goal back for the visitors 11 minutes later, but a makeshift San Jose backline withstood some withering pressure to record just their third win of the season and hand the Galaxy their first road loss of the campaign. The Galaxy created a great chance in the 29th minute. Magee broke in alone on Cannon, and after the Quakes 'keeper forced him wide of goal, the Galaxy attacker centered for Kyle Patterson, only to see his close-range shot blocked by Chris Leitch, and then claimed by Cannon. LA kept the pressure on, but couldn't find a breakthrough. Edson Buddle headed Magee's cross just over the bar in the 40th minute, and the half ended with the Quakes' precarious lead intact. San Jose doubled their advantage in the second half. A cross from Chris Leitch was knocked down by Campos toward the far post, and Johnson was first to react, stabbing his shot past Ricketts to give the Quakes a 2-0 lead. L.A. didn't let up, and pulled within a goal in the 65th minute. A Magee free kick found substitute Alan Gordon in the box, and his header was then redirected by Kirovski past Cannon. It was Kirovski's first goal since scoring for Colorado against Toronto FC back on Oct. 7, 2007. Kirovski then nearly added another three minutes later, but his flick header from a Magee corner was saved smartly by Cannon. The Quakes continued to survive some hair-raising goalmouth incidents as the game edged towards full time, with an 83rd minute header from Berhalter that sailed just wide the best of the lot. But San Jose managed to hang and claim a vital win against their bitter rivals.

On April 18, Campos opened the scoring for the home side after just five minutes against the Galaxy, and this past weekend Campos once again scored early with a penalty kick in the sixth minute. To set up the penalty kick, he took on and split two Galaxy defenders before being brought down by Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter. The Quakes gave up their lead and lost to Los Angeles on July 4, 2004 for the first time since July 27, 2002 against Kansas City. The Quakes are also impressive in the playoffs when scoring first, posting a 6-0-0 record.
Scoring First Under Yallop

Halftime Success
The Earthquakes remain amongst the best in league history in holding onto a half-time lead after beating the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 on June 20. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, the Earthquakes are now 56-1-10 in games when leading at the half, including 8-0-1 in 2003, 7-0-1 in 2004 and 7-0-3 in 2005. Despite holding a halftime lead on May 10, 2008 vs. Columbus, the Quakes fell 3-2. That game marked the team's first loss since 1999 when holding a halftime lead.
