Chicago Fire FC News Release

After defeating San Luis of the Mexican Primera Division 1-0 in the first game of SuperLiga 2009 last Saturday, the Fire continue group play this Tuesday, June 23, against Chivas USA of Major League Soccer at TOYOTA PARK (7 p.m. CT, TeleFutura). The Fire will host a doubleheader for their match on Tuesday as San Luis and Tigres UANL will face off following the Fire's match. Preliminary group play will finish for the Fire as the team lines up against Tigres UANL on Saturday, June 27 at TOYOTA PARK (7 p.m. CT).

The Fire enter the second match of SuperLiga group play with three points after downing San Luis last Saturday. In the 69th minute, Fire designated player Cuauhtémoc Blanco slipped a pass from deep in the left corner to the top of the 18-yard box for McBride sprinting into the area. McBride ran onto the pass and placed a shot into the net for the game-winner.

The Fire's opponent, Chivas USA, fell to Tigres UANL 2-1 in their first match of SuperLiga last Saturday and will be forced to play without the services of Eduardo Lillingston tomorrow night who was ejected after receiving two yellow card cautions against Tigres. The Fire defeated Chivas USA 3-2 on May 28th during MLS league play in one of the most exciting matches so far of the season.

The Fire will look to pick up important points as they are tied for the top spot in SuperLiga Group A with Tigres UANL. The top two teams from each group (A and B) will advance to the tournament semifinals on July 15th, locations and times to be announced at a later date. Chicago is competing for the first time in the third annual competition, which pits top soccer teams from Mexico and the United States against each other for local bragging rights and one of the biggest purses in the region. The third annual Superliga tournament showcases the budding rivalry between top teams from Mexico and MLS.
